Reality-check take

JOI AI has one feature that sets it apart. Alongside original and community-made characters, it offers official AI versions of real content creators who have licensed their likeness. Annual Premium has been seen at checkout for under $50 a year. JOI also runs a second currency, Neurons, which charges per item for some mature-content messages, photos and videos. Plan a Neuron budget and it can be good value; ignore it and the real cost may surprise you.

What the product is before you pay

JOI AI runs in the browser and is strictly for adults 18+. Its character library is divided into Joi Originals, community-made characters and a creators section, which JOI's about page calls official digital versions of real people. You can filter by age range, gender and many themes, and build a character of your own.

The terms name Novi Limited in Nicosia, Cyprus, as provider for users outside the US; reviewers report Lanoto Solutions Inc. in New York serves the US. The general experience lives on joi.ai and a separate mature-content tier on joi.com, with one account working on both according to reviewers. Note that "Joi – AI Companion", a mobile app from another developer, is unrelated, say independent reviewers.

Free limits vs paid unlocks

JOI keeps Premium pricing behind sign-up, and its terms warn that prices "may vary based on region, length of subscription" and promotions. The table uses checkout prices reported by third-party reviewers; they do not come from JOI's public pages.

Plan Price seen at checkout (USD, August 2026)
Basic (free) $0: limited chat on basic models, a few free images, small Neuron balance; no voice or video
Premium, 1 month $13.99
Premium, 3 months $20.99
Premium, 12 months $47.99 (about $4/month)

What actually works without paying

Calling

You can make voice calls on Premium, metered at about 2,000 Neurons per five minutes according to reviewers. Long calls are therefore one of the priciest things to do.

Short videos

Called Dream Clips, these are five-second AI videos. Reviewers report about 5 per month on Premium, with more costing Neurons.

Image tools

Images can be made from prompts both in chat and in the AI tools area, with a reported Premium allowance of around 50 a month before Neurons kick in.

Licensed creator personas

This is JOI's clearest difference from rivals: AI versions of creators who have signed up through its creator partnership programme. Reviewers report that some of these characters cost extra Neurons to unlock.

Chat

You can switch between several chat models, and reviewers rate the Premium-only "Saturn" best at staying in character. JOI promotes long cross-session memory, with one reviewer citing an unverified "8,000-message" figure. In a short-session audit from August 2026, recall of seeded facts was reportedly good, and roleplay stopped at once when requested.

Custom characters

One custom character comes with Premium; additional ones reportedly cost about 1,000 Neurons each.

If chatting with an official AI version of a creator appeals to you, JOI is the main platform built around that idea.

Stay free if… unlock if…

JOI AI suits you if you are curious about creator-style companions, want a broad media toolkit and are happy to lock in a cheap annual plan. It works best for people who read the Neuron price list first and decide in advance how much extra they will spend.

Skip it if you dislike credit systems and want one price for everything. It is also not the best choice if long voice calls are your main use, or if you need billing that does not mention the platform.

Free-tier FAQ

Is there a free version?

Yes, the Basic account: limited chat, a handful of images and a small Neuron balance. Premium is needed for mature-content settings, voice and video.

How much does Premium cost for a beginner?

Prices are not public. In August 2026, independent reviewers saw $13.99 for a month, $20.99 for three and $47.99 for a year at checkout; yours may vary by region and promotion.

What exactly are Neurons?

An in-app currency for content not included in your subscription. The terms list 4 Neurons to read a message, up to 120 per photo view and up to 1,900 per video view.

Are creator characters actual people?

They are AI characters based on real creators who licensed their likeness through JOI's creator programme, according to JOI. The person is not on the other end.

What if I want a refund?

Activated subscriptions are generally non-refundable. Within 14 days, the policy covers specific cases such as card fraud or a first accidental Neuron purchase.

Reality-check takeaway

If licensed creator personas appeal to you, JOI AI is the platform to try, and the annual entry price is low. Just treat Neurons as a separate budget line. People who read the Neuron price list and decide their limit in advance get good value; people who expect Premium to cover everything usually do not.
